CIRSE 2022
This year I had the pleasure of attending CIRSE (Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe) 2022 in Barcelona.
The first face-to-face meeting since 2019, it was a pleasure seeing some familiar faces in the crowd. I arrived on a Saturday morning to be blown away by the scale of the conference. With over 5000 delegates, it’s one of the largest meetings I’ve been to. I was privileged to meet so many interventional radiologists, in particular the BSIR committee, which allowed me the opportunity to exchange ideas on anaesthesia and radiology.
The conference began with the president of CIRSE talking about the IR team and I was pleased to hear him include anaesthetists as a core member.
I was fortunate enough to get a space on the sedation course run by a couple of anaesthetists from Germany, who spoke eloquently about the use of sedation by interventional radiologists. It was clear that sedation is a topic favourite amongst interventional radiologists and there is some way to go in standardising sedation practice.
It wasn’t all work in Barcelona and I spent a lovely couple of evenings getting to know different teams from various hospitals, both in the UK and Europe. I was pleased to see a palpable interest in collaborating with anaesthetists and as the society grows we hope to turn these ideas into reality.
The future is exciting for the Society of Anaesthesia and Radiology, with many projects in the pipeline. So watch this space!
