A New Chapter
17 October 2026
Dear Colleagues,
The SAR leadership and the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR) have been carefully considering how best to support and develop the future of Anaesthesia within Radiology. Following extensive discussion and evaluation of the available options, we on the SAR committee have concluded that the strongest long-term future for SAR is to become a Special Interest Committee of BSIR.
We appreciate that this represents a significant change, and we want to reassure members that this decision has been considered thoughtfully and in-depth. Ultimately, we believe this change will deliver greater benefits for members and help improve the care provided to patients undergoing radiology procedures
Why are we making this change?
Over many years, SAR has played an important role in bringing together clinicians with an interest in Anaesthesia and Radiology, however, operating as a standalone Society with all elements delivered by active clinicians, inevitably limits what can be achieved.
By becoming a BSIR Special Interest Committee, the group will have access to the BSIR staff team, greater organisational support, infrastructure and resources, allowing the clinicians on the committee to focus on delivering meaningful activity rather than administration.
Thank you
We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to SAR over the years. The commitment of members has helped establish an important community and laid the foundations for the next chapter. We are genuinely excited about the opportunities that this partnership will create. Look forward to working with you to build a stronger, more influential voice for Anaesthesia and Radiology.
Kind regards,
SAR Committee
